Vallejo is a vibrant residential city located in the North Bay Area, about 30 miles north of San Francisco and 15 miles south of Napa. Named after General Mariano G. Vallejo, the city of Vallejo was built on a naval foundation and was influential in the formation of early Californian government—in 1852 and 1853 it was the capital of the state of California. The landmarks of Vallejo reflect its history as it is home to the first United States Naval base built on the Pacific Ocean: the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The shipyard is now a California Historical Landmark and a major museum. In addition to its rich history, Vallejo has several parks and trails that showcase its natural beauty and prime waterfront scenery, including the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the San Francisco Bay Trail. A growing residential city, Vallejo has four golf courses, three shopping centers, and one amusement park. Vallejo also has two weekly farmers’ markets on Fridays and Saturdays and a bustling downtown dining and shopping area.

Just across the bay, Vallejo has become a growing destination for commuters and offers a ferry running from downtown Vallejo to the San Francisco Ferry Building. The Solano County bus system (SolTrans) also provides bus service throughout Vallejo and to nearby BART stations.
